Shofars & Shofar Sounds WHAT IS A SHOFAR? A Shofar=Ram Horn=Trumpet is an ancient wind instrument made from the horn of the ram=male sheep. Or a longer spiral instruments made from the Yemenite antelopes. The Shofar is the world's oldest wind instrument of Worship and instrument of Spiritual Warfare. It is the ancestor of modern bugles and trumpets.
In biblical and present Isra'el, the Shofar is used mainly on Rosh Has'hanah (Jewish New Year), Yom Kippur (Day of Repentance). The Shofar is used to announce events of any kind. Similar to church bells in Christianity. The Shofar is to be blown in the presence of Adonai (Ref. CJB 2 Samuel 6:15), to announce the coming of Adonai's judgement (ref. CJB. Joel 2:1), and herald the coming of Adonai (Ref. Revelation 11:15). It is also a call to the resurrection of the Dead (Ref. 1 Cor.15:52). It is the sound of freedom or release from bondage! How to blow the Shofar?
What are the Shofar Sounds?
The Tekieh is a single blast, rising at the end. It is a call to worship and praise. (Psalm 150 v3) The Tekieh Gadol The Tekieh Gado (Gadol means great, or high) is a very long held and loud Tekieh. This is the sound like that which the Lord sounded on Sinai. Jewish tradition says that God took the two horns of the ram that was sacrificed instead of Isaac on Mount Moriah and that he blew one on Sinai, but He will blow the other to announce the coming of Messiah) That means this is the sound of the "Last Trumpet".
The Shavarim is (are - words ending im are plural) three rising blasts. The Shavarim calls for repentance and humility. (Isaiah 58 v1) Please also check your bible for "The Feast of Trmpets" and "The Day of Atonement"
The Teruah is a series of nine short blasts. It is a call to warfare, a celebration of victory or other celebration. (Psalm 47 v5) |
